Four Ways to Embrace the French Art de Vivre

French art de vivre

As I’ve mentioned before, France is famous for its rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine, but perhaps the most defining aspect of French life is the "art de vivre" - the art of living. This French philosophy is all about savoring life's pleasures, embracing beauty and creativity, and living life to the fullest. Here are four ways you can embrace the French lifestyle and bring a touch of art de vivre into your life.

1.Start with Food

French cuisine is renowned for its delicious flavors and fresh ingredients, and enjoying a meal is an integral part of the art de vivre. Whether you're dining out or cooking at home, make sure to take your time and savor each bite. In France, it’s usually common during the weekends to gather with family and enjoy a long meal, filled with great conversations. In my family, it’s about sharing time together, while doing something we love: eating!

My first job after college was in a communications agency in the South of France. I loved the 1.5 hour-long break we “had” to take. Even when it was a busy day, we took that necessary time to give our minds a break, and make room for more inspiration and better energy in the afternoon.

It is simply part of the culture to make mealtime a relaxed and enjoyable experience, surrounded by good company and great conversations. I know the American corporate culture is far from that but perhaps you can adopt the French approach on the weekends?

2.Embrace Beauty

The French are renowned for their appreciation of beauty and style, and this is reflected in their fashion, architecture, and art.

You don’t have to become an art collector to instill the French art de vivre into your life. A simple bouquet of fresh flowers can bring beauty and joy into your day. To live a life à la Française, one shall appreciate the beauty in the everyday life. How about making your home a haven of comfort and style?

Since the start, my mission with Best French Forever has been to handpick beautiful yet simple items from Provence, and promote a different way of living: one that is made of fewer, more quality pieces. I love to surround myself with beautiful things that have a story, that are handmade by a passionate artisan, and that are crafted with nature and people in mind. I want to bring that to you too!

I also think it is important to find beauty in our surroundings, beyond the material: a walk in nature, near the ocean or at the park, a stroll on a street you love, a visit to the local museum, an art class…

3.Cherish Experiences

French life is all about cherishing experiences, from long, leisurely meals to social events and cultural landmarks. Make a point of doing things you love and trying new experiences, whether it's visiting an art exhibit, trying a new restaurant, or taking a stroll in a picturesque park. The key is to embrace each moment, no matter how big or small it is.

4.Live in the Moment

One of the hallmarks of the French art de vivre is the emphasis on living in the moment and enjoying life to the fullest. Don't get caught up in the rush and stress of modern life, but instead, take the time to relax and enjoy the simple things. Whether it's a quiet moment with a good book or a leisurely coffee with a friend, make time for yourself and be fully present.

In conclusion, the French art de vivre is a philosophy of life that emphasizes the importance of savoring life's pleasures and embracing beauty and creativity. By incorporating these values into your daily routine, you can bring a touch of la dolce vita into your life and live life to the fullest. So why not start today and embrace the French art de vivre?
