Three Reasons Why Provence Should Be On Your Bucket List
Ok sure, I’m biased… But everything listed in this article is true. I’m determined I can convince you to add Provence to your next vacation in France… :)
Provence is a stunning region in the South of France, which, according to me, captures the essence of French culture, history, and beauty.
From its rolling hills and lavender fields to its charming villages and bustling cities, Provence has something for everyone. Whether you're a lover of nature, history, or food, a visit to Provence is an experience you'll never forget. Here are four reasons why you should add Provence to your itinerary the next time you visit France.
Art and Architecture
Have you heard of Aix en Provence? It’s a historic city renowned for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and bustling energy. Take a stroll through the narrow streets and admire the 18th-century mansions, fountains, and gardens. I personally love the Quartier Mazarin and the fountain of the Four Dolphins (Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins). Stop at Hotel Caumont and take a walk through their beautiful garden, or enjoy the tasteful exhibit and boutique inside. Their café, outdoor terrace and menu are pretty exquisite too!
The Cours Mirabeau, one of the most famous streets in Aix-en-Provence, and the Pavillon Vendôme, will give you a true taste of Provençal charm.
Diversity of Landscapes
No visit to Provence is complete without a visit to the famous lavender fields. From June to August, these fields come alive with the vibrant purple of the lavender plants, creating a breathtaking landscape that is the epitome of Provence. You don’t need to go to Valensole to admire the blooming lavender fields. While it’s the most famous site and certainly offers breathtaking views and serenity, it is often crowded (don’t let the photos fool you!) and you can also find similar, beautiful fields in the Luberon valley. Simply take a drive in the countryside, and between Ménerbes, Oppède, Cabrières d’Avignon or the more famous Gordes, you will definitely fill your view with lavender fields.
For the adventurers, take a drive towards the Mediterranean Sea and explore the stunning coastline of the Calanques National Park, located between Marseille and Cassis. This stunning natural reserve is home to breathtaking cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and hidden coves. Take a hike along the trails, go kayaking, or simply relax on the beaches and soak up the sun. I have fond memories of Sunday spent in Méjean or Niolon in the summer…
Amazing Food and Restaurant Scenes
This is an unpopular opinion but I think when it comes to food, Provence is better than Paris. Now, hear me… There are of course amazing, Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris which attract foodies from all around the world. But the magic of Provence is in its rich culinary tradition and an abundance of fresh produce.
Because agriculture has such an important place and there are lots of growers, we get to enjoy seasonal vegetables and fruits all year round and it makes a difference in the plate. The region is famous for its olive oil, cheeses, and wine, and there's no better place to try these local specialties than in the charming villages of the Luberon.
I love going to the markets every week and taste local products. I get my honey from a producer in Eygalieres at every visit (the village’s lovely market is every Friday morning), I go to the market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (on Sunday morning) for the spices and produce… And I recommend Bonnieux for a taste of the local cuisine, and to indulge in the delicious dishes made from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
Some traditional dishes you’ll find in Provence are: la bouillabaisse (fish soup, famous in Marseilles), la ratatouille (veggies stew), la tapenade (an apéritif spread made with black or green olives, capers, garlic and olive oil), la daube (a winter-y beef stew made with red wine and served with carrots and potatoes). There are many more. What I would say is that the cuisine du Sud is simple, yet so flavorful.
