Email Subject: The Big Jump

The French Expression

“Faire le grand saut.” This literally means “to do the big jump." — i.e., when you have an important decision to make: like changing career, getting married or moving to a new country. I've done a lot of big jumps in the last few years, and I think it has helped me get more comfortable with the feeling of fear. Have you done any big jumps lately?

The Beauty Tip

Want to know the secret to a messy smokey eye à la française ? Take your black eyeliner pencil, add a little bit of lip balm to get a creamy texture. Then blend on your eyelid with your fingertips, et voilà ! French women don’t use powder shadows or degradé lids, it’s too complicated. Try it for a look à la Marion Cotillard.

The Recipe

Tartiflette: The better version of your potato casserole, with Reblochon cheese in the leading role. This dish comes from Savoie, a region in the French Alps, and is a rich meal you can’t wait to devour after a day of skiing or hiking in the mountain. Because winter is not over yet, tartiflette will make the perfect comfort food dinner. Plus, it will make your kitchen smells like inside a French ski lodge. Miam !

Savoir Vivre

La bise (NOT the French kiss!): I always wondered why the kiss with the tongue is called the French kiss. As you probably all know, the way the French greet someone is by giving them kisses on the cheeks. The number of kisses actually varies depending which region you live in: four in Paris and the North of France, two in the South and three for the cool kids. You just have to know your audience!

The Movie

Les Petits Mouchoirs (English trailer: Little White Lies - 2010): One of my favorite films! It's about friendships, love, secrets and shit that happens in life. Promise it's worth the tears.
